Logistics and distribution has the function of managing the entire process of delivery of goods from one location to another, whether it be on a national or international scale. The ultimate job of those in logistics and distribution is to ensure the safe, cost effective and efficient delivery of goods to their requested destination. Most of the transport of goods is by either sea or land, and many logistics and distribution jobs are located in strategically placed warehouses. There are many stages to the process, and at all times the location of the goods must be accounted for. Jobs in logistics and distribution vary greatly, and can go from drivers to administrative functions up to operations managers and logistics coordinators. On a day to day basis the job of a logistics assistant will receive packages from sellers and partners where they must ensure the quality and quantity is correct, trace and track all deliveries, ensure accuracy of all inventories, maintain communication with partners to ensure working order, review bills, invoices and purchase orders, ensure that payments to partners are processed in time, assist customers with enquiries, organise files both manually and electronically and coordinate deliveries for repaired or returned items. A logistics coordinator on the other hand will communicate effectively with clients, couriers and other operational departments such as finance and the sales team, maintain records of all logistic expenses such as freight, customs duty tax, and customs broker fees, supervise cargo loading and unloading, obtain MIC permits, import licenses and FOD certificates from Government Departments, work closely with local logistics suppliers, freight forwarders, trucking companies, shipping lines, customs brokers, and customers to improve operations, reduce costs and maximise efficiency. With so many stakeholders, not only are organisational skills key, but excellent computer skills and a command on the English language are more than beneficial.
In Myanmar, the infrastructure is still being developed, and as these projects go forward so will logistics and distribution capabilities. The Myanmar Government has made some quite recent reforms in the area, not only in regards to foreign investment but projects which facilitate efficient logistics and distributions systems. The number one example of this is the Kyaukpyu Port project in Rakhine State which will create an overland link between Myanmar and China which means that ships will avoid the Strait of Malacca, effectively saving 5000km of travelling distance which is optimum for the logistics and distribution function. There are many jobs available in logistics and distribution in Myanmar. If you have a look at the opportunities on jobnet.com.mm, you will see availabilities for drivers, logistics assistants, operations managers, documentation officers, customs clearance staff and so forth. To acquire a job in logistics and distribution is dependant on what you are seeking. For example, there are many jobs which are labour intensive and involve the lifting, and handling of cargo by either hand or with the assistance of a machine. For these jobs, formal education is not required, what is more imperative is a certain level of physical strength as lifting is required. For drivers a clean and valid drivers licence is needed. For entry level administrative positions, a high school education is required as well as a command on the English Language, organisational skills and naturally computer skills. Even when one does start at an entry level position, once they have learnt the processes and the machinations of the company and industry there are many opportunities for growth, especially if one undertakes a formal education, such as in business administration at the same time. From there one may move into the managerial function or the accounting or human resources department. At an administrative level, there is also a lot of interaction with stakeholders, so for a bright and eager administrator there is always the possibility of moving into a customer relations or business development role. Other jobs such as national logistics manager, channel distribution manager, and logistic coordinator normally require a degree in a business field as well as a sufficient amount of experience. To be good in these roles not only requires organisational dexterity, but supreme communication skills as much of the role is interacting with and balancing stakeholders. As the logistics and distribution industry is an international one, there is much room for growth, including the opportunity to travel.
