At the very heart of it, the job of telecommunications is to facilitate communication on a global scale. Telecommunications occurs when the exchange between participants uses technology over a distance, for example telephones, television, computer networks, and wireless networks either electronically or through use of cables. It is such a vast industry, that there is no limit to the jobs in telecommunications, especially in Myanmar. There have been some reforms in Myanmar which have created jobs in telecommunications. In 2013 the government started writing licences to new service providers, and as of 2017 there are four main telecom providers which are MPT, Ooredoo, Telenor and MNTC and most jobs in telecommunications in Myanmar are with these four providers. Did you know that as of June 2015 there was a telecommunications penetration rate of 54% in Myanmar, and that was up from less than 10% in 2012. That figure is steadily growing, meaning there are more jobs in telecommunication. Some examples of jobs in telecommunications include manufacturers of networking equipment, engineers (such as field engineers who install equipment, network engineers who plan the network needs, quality assurance engineers), marketing managers, sales executives, Public Relations specialists, those with administrative duties, human resources, accounting, advertising executives and brand managers. These are just some examples. The telecommunications industry is vital as in this day and age people receive all of their information through their cellphones and internet. So whether it be receiving emails, listening to music, reading the news or watching movies, telecommunications is involved at all different stages, meaning that the jobs are limitless.
Myanmar was closed for so very long, and is now going through a rate of rapid growth (especially in regards to communication and telecommunication) as it connects to the rest of the world. There are so many projects surrounding telecommunications, and the players in the market. Due to the economic growth in Myanmar, there seems to be an emerging middle class, and there is much competition for their consumer dollar. Most of the jobs in telecommunications in Myanmar are in the four main telecoms mentioned earlier: MPT, Ooredoo and MNTC. These four companies are in competition with each other to have the best service regarding value and access. They are also in competition to obtain the best staff. To get a job in telecommunications depends on what role you are looking for. Any of the engineering jobs such as test engineer and electrical engineer requires a degree, and the same goes for jobs in human resources, accounting, and marketing. To obtain a job sales, a relevant degree is not always required, what is more important is experience in sales and having the ability to meet targets and cope with pressure. Many of the skills in sales are transferrable so it is also possible to come from a different industry. Jobs not requiring a high level education include those in manufacturing as well as those in construction. Another area which is imperative telecommunications is customer service, wither in shops or from a call centre perspective. These jobs do not require a degree, however a command on the English language is more than beneficial. Not only do these jobs give one an insight to the machinations of the business, but they also provide flexibility allowing employees to study at the same time.
