Yangon may not be the capital of Myanmar, but it is the largest city and the economic hub, offering by far the most job opportunities. Working in Yangon is becoming increasing popular for expatriates as it is friendly, vibrant, dynamic and affordable, and there are opportunities in across all functions in many industries. The infrastructure may not be on par with other Asian cities, but it more than makes up for it in charm. And this in itself raises opportunities for engineering specialists. The streets are lined with vendors selling delicious snacks and meals: you can only imagine the flavours considering Myanmar is bordered by India, Thailand, Laos, China and Bangladesh. Adding to this, Yangon has a rich cultural history, and one of the most prominent displays of this is the colonial architecture in downtown. Not only do these facades need to be preserved, but they are in high demand offering opportunities for creatives as well as professionals in sales and business development (especially from construction and real estate perspectives). Like the infrastructure, the healthcare and education is not quite on par yet either, but saying that it still offers the best of both in Myanmar, and boasts the highest number of educational facilities and hospitals (as wells International schools). As they grow healthcare and education (especially with the influx of foreigners) need to rise to international standards, which creates a need for human resource professionals to attract and retain the best possible staff. There are various areas of Yangon that people who have relocated choose to live. There is the bustling and noisy downtown, there is Sanchaung Township, the ever popular with ex-pats Yaw Myin Gyi area, or the suburbs. These areas are very different as people have different ideals on where they would like to live, which is why it is imperative for relocation agencies to hire someone in marketing so that the correct information can be provided and ideally a sale be made and loyalty established. When choosing where to live taking into consideration your proximity to work is advisable as the traffic in Yangon has become increasingly more congested from the increase of the amount of cars, and even though taxis are affordable they can take a long time. Living in Yangon can be as affordable or expensive as you choose. An apartment can cost anywhere from $200 a month to $6000 (always advisable to search once you arrive as you really need to look around). Food can cost anywhere from .80c. Over the last few years a lot more options for eating have come up, and now there is even good options for home delivery and many swanky restaurants, live music special nights. Since the new government has sought to increase international development and improve taxation the need for accounting and finance professionals to implement new procedures and legislation as well as meet reporting standards has become essential, especially for international companies.
To say that there is an increasing abundance of job opportunities in Myanmar is quite the understatement. Name the industry and you can be quite sure that is experiencing growth. Firstly, Yangon has the international airport meaning that most people land here, which makes Yangon the starting point for most tourists. As Myanmar is the latest “thing” in Tourism, this industry is growing at a rapid pace, meaning that there are a multitude of jobs in the tourism industry. However with the huge influx of tourists, the supply of accommodation is not meeting the demand, which has propelled the construction of more hotels, which has created an abundance of engineering jobs. As has the building of new offices to accommodate international businesses “setting up shop” here. And so it continues, as a result of the international companies moving to Yangon, there is an increasing demand for real estate services, as well as schools and language teachers. Not to mention the job opportunities that arise from these international companies in all various functions like accounting and finance, engineering, sales and business development, marketing and human resources.
